Picnic at Hanging Rock is a musical adaptation of Joan Lindsay's novel about a group of schoolgirls who mysteriously disappear during a picnic at Hanging Rock. For this project, I developed key art concepts and visual directions for the production.
Goal / Brief
The initial creative direction drew heavily from the film adaptation, emphasizing a darker, vintage, and eerie atmosphere. As the project evolved, the production leaned toward a more feminine interpretation, highlighting themes of sexuality, mystery, and desire. The last two comps were made with this in mind.
In response, I developed a range of concepts that explored floral imagery, movement, and bold color palettes while maintaining the unsettling tone at the heart of the story. The first six images are from my exploration of this concept.
Challenges
Without a dedicated photoshoot, all concepts had to be developed without custom photography. This required finding creative ways to communicate the show's atmosphere and themes while working with limited visual resources.
What I'm Proud Of
I'm particularly proud of the bolder concepts developed during the process. The vibrant color palettes and dynamic compositions pushed the visual direction in a more contemporary and striking way while still supporting the themes of the production.
